The history behind the Augustiner Bräu – Munich’s oldest brewery with over 670 years of bewing pedigree – probably goes back to 1294, when the first foundation stone of the Augustinian monastery was laid on the Haberfeld. Official records show that the monastery building housed a brewery as early as 1328, and that the beer being brewed there was particularly delicious.
1328 is therefore considered to be the founding date of the Augustiner Brewery, making it the oldest brewery that still exists in Munich today. Beer has been brewed here continuously from when the brewery was founded right through to the site’s secularisation. The brewery’s beer was sold to the public at the site’s own tavern, which took advantage of the monastery’s special rights to brew and serve beer. The friendly atmosphere at the monastery tavern made it a particularly popular haunt.
After the monks moved out in 1803, the brewery was privatised and eventually relocated to Neuhauserstrasse 27 in 1817. The last relocation happened in 1885, when the Wagner family moved the brewery to Landsbergerstrasse in front of the city’s gates. This family had bought the business in 1829 and ran it as a private brewery, which is how successive owners have run the brewery ever since. Throughout its long history, Augustiner Bräu has never forgotten its original philosophy, nor compromised the quality of its beers. As a result, Augustiner Bräu has become an integral part of the Munich lifestyle.
