Only the best brewing water

We source the excellent brewing water for our beers from a well 230 metres below the grounds of the brewery.

We give our malted barley room to breathe

The traditional way of malting barley involves spreading the grain out on the floor and turning it regularly to expose it evenly to the air. This might take a lot more space than modern techniques, but it makes the beer taste even better!

Hand-selected premium hops

You can always taste when a beer is made from good-quality hops. That’s why Augustiner Bräu only uses the highest quality, specially selected hops.

The power of yeast

Augustiner monks were already aware of this superfood when they started brewing. The yeast cultures used in our beers have been giving them that extra special something ever since.

AUGUSTINER HELL

Water, malted barley, hops – 5.2% ABV

A particularly mild yet tangy long-aged brew. Wonderfully refreshing! Its unique taste is a treat for any beer connoisseur.

AUGUSTINER EDELSTOFF

Water, malted barley, hops – 5.6% ABV

A pale export beer that’s brewed from the finest raw ingredients. Tangy, with a mellow and refreshing taste. The pinnacle of traditional Bavarian brewing skills.

AUGUSTINER WEIßBIER (WHEAT BEER)

Water, malted wheat, malted barley, hops, yeast – 5.4% ABV

An amber-coloured wheat beer brewed with tried-and-trusted methods, using carefully selected ingredients. It owes its fresh taste and delicate spiciness to the careful bottle fermentation process, remaining in the cellars until it has reached peak maturity.

AUGUSTINER PILS

Water, malted barley, hops – 5.6% ABV

Made using only the finest malt and aroma hops, this effervescent beer presents delicate notes of hops and an impressive foam head. The beer is brewed according to the original Pilsener method.

AUGUSTINER DUNKEL (DARK BEER)

Water, malted barley, hops – 5.6% ABV

A traditional Munich speciality! This dark beer combines malted aromas and plenty of spice. Full-on flavour for fans of dark beers.

The German Beer Purity law dates back to similar law in the Duchy of Bavaria from 1516.

Wilhelm IV, Duke of Bavaria made the decree in Ingolstadt on St. George’s Day 1516 detailing how beer was allowed to be brewed and served during summer and winter. According to the original law: […]

We hereby proclaim and decree, by Authority of our Province, that henceforth in the Duchy of Bavaria, in the country as well as in the cities and marketplaces, the following rules apply to the sale of beer: From Michaelmas to Georgi, the price for one Mass [1,069 ml] or one Kopf [bowl-shaped container for fluids, not quite one Mass], is not to exceed one Pfennig Munich value, and from Georgi to Michaelmas, the Mass shall not be sold for more than two Pfennig of the same value, the Kopf not more than three Heller [Heller usually equals one-half Pfennig].

Should any person brew, or otherwise have, other beer than March beer, it is not to be sold any higher than one Pfennig per Mass. […]

Furthermore, we wish to emphasise that, in future in all cities, marketplaces and in the country, the only ingredients used for the brewing of beer must be barley, hops and water. […]

A brief journey through time

The history behind the Augustiner Bräu

The history behind the Augustiner Bräu – Munich’s oldest brewery with over 670 years of bewing pedigree – probably goes back to 1294, when the first foundation stone of the Augustinian monastery was laid on the Haberfeld. Official records show that the monastery building housed a brewery as early as 1328, and that the beer being brewed there was particularly delicious.

1328 is therefore considered to be the founding date of the Augustiner Brewery, making it the oldest brewery that still exists in Munich today. Beer has been brewed here continuously from when the brewery was founded right through to the site’s secularisation. The brewery’s beer was sold to the public at the site’s own tavern, which took advantage of the monastery’s special rights to brew and serve beer. The friendly atmosphere at the monastery tavern made it a particularly popular haunt.

After the monks moved out in 1803, the brewery was privatised and eventually relocated to Neuhauserstrasse 27 in 1817. The last relocation happened in 1885, when the Wagner family moved the brewery to Landsbergerstrasse in front of the city’s gates. This family had bought the business in 1829 and ran it as a private brewery, which is how successive owners have run the brewery ever since. Throughout its long history, Augustiner Bräu has never forgotten its original philosophy, nor compromised the quality of its beers. As a result, Augustiner Bräu has become an integral part of the Munich lifestyle.
